Newcastle South Beach is a vital part of the inner-city coastline and a highlight of the City of Newcastle’s Bathers Way project, designed to create a continuous coastal promenade along this stunning stretch of coast. Situated at the base of a coastal cliff and directly on the sand, the beach offers a truly unique location for a high-profile skate park. With over 100 years of history as a popular bathing destination, this site has evolved through various structures, facilities, and uses.

Few places in the world can match the thrill of skating above a bowl that overlooks the beach, with surfers riding waves just meters away and hang gliders soaring overhead.

Overcoming Challenges to Create Something Extraordinary

This project is a testament to the dedication of the local council, which overcame numerous challenges to bring it to life. The team managed constant coastal sea swells, limited construction access, heritage conservation requirements, cliff stability concerns, the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and historical site contamination.

A World-Class Skate Facility

The completed skate park features:

  • A cantilevered skate bowl above the beach.
  • A lower promenade flow skate area, catering to different skating styles.
  • Upper and lower amenities, including change rooms and showers.
  • A kiosk, exercise areas, and shade structures.
  • Seating bleachers and endemic landscape rehabilitation.
  • Rockfall fencing for safety.

A 115-year-old stone shade structure has been seamlessly integrated into the design, providing picnic seating and showcasing perforated art panels that display historical photographs of the area.

Part of the Bathers Way Experience

Newcastle South Beach is now a key highlight of the Bathers Way coastal walk, which stretches from Merewether to Newcastle. Almost complete, this public promenade offers fantastic coastal access and has become a cherished community amenity.

As one of the jewels along this scenic walk, Newcastle South Beach celebrates the city’s rich history while providing a world-class recreational space for locals and visitors alike.
