Newcastle Ocean Baths, a heritage-listed and iconic Australian ocean pool, holds a significant place in the history and culture of Newcastle, NSW. Built in 1922 on a dramatic rock peninsula, the baths have long been celebrated for their breathtaking location, which offers panoramic views of the coastline. Their distinctive art deco architecture, including the curved walls and entrance pavilion, has made them a beloved landmark and a vital part of Newcastle’s identity for over a century.

Over the years, the baths endured natural wear and tear from harsh ocean conditions, leading to their degradation and the need for a comprehensive restoration. This presented an opportunity not only to preserve their historical integrity but also to enhance their functionality and appeal for future generations.

Stage 1 of the refurbishment addressed critical structural and design issues. Key upgrades included the pool itself, structural surrounds, decks, walls, bleachers, shade structures, fencing, handrails, ramps, and lighting. A state-of-the-art pump system was also installed, capable of being remotely managed and refilling the pool after cleaning in less than six hours—ensuring consistently high-quality water for swimmers.

The restoration also provided an opportunity to resolve longstanding design challenges. Improvements were made to enhance swimmer access, accommodate maintenance vehicles, and provide better public seating and shade. Terras led the design for the new works, collaborating with GHD Consulting Engineers, who managed the structural and hydraulic systems. A highlight of the project was the careful integration of extensive new bleachers, a lifeguard facility, and shade structures, all thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the baths’ heritage setting.

The art deco curved walls were not only retained but also extended, reaffirming their status as a key architectural feature of the baths. Since the completion of the restoration, the Newcastle Ocean Baths have once again become a hub of activity, drawing local residents and visitors alike. The project has been widely hailed as a success, ensuring that this historic gem continues to serve the community and stand as a testament to Newcastle’s rich maritime heritage.
